Broadband Reality Check! FCC - finally realizes there is a problem?

FCC - Agrees to asses New Broadband Reporting Rules

The GAO recently reported in a PDF Report that “Deployment of Broadband Appears to Be Extensive, but FCC’s Form 477 Data May Not Provide an Accurate Depiction of Gaps in Broadband Deployment”

In layman’s terms the arcane 200kb broadband limit and zip code overlay approximates a poor representation of actual rural broadband access across the US.

This type of reporting has allowed the US to drop to 15th Internationally according to the ITU and this source: But finally we may have a light at the end of the tunnel. The GAO report has caused the FCC to make a “Notice of proposed Rulemaking Change” according to Ars which may lead to improvements in the state of Broadband througout the US.

I for one am very hopeful that these rule changes will lead to better data collection and a true competitive analysis of Broadband penetration of at least 512kb down with 2 or more providers per census block and zip code. The more broadband competition that exists the more likely that prices will be pressured downward where more consumers could easily afford such Broadband Internet access!
